Westbrook throws complete game against Tigers

June 21, 2012 By Bill Pollock

Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook allowed one unearned run on five hits, while striking out five and walking one for his 14th career complete game, as the Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers, 3-1.

The Tigers drew first blood in the third. Austin Jackson gave them a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the third after former Cardinal Gerald Laird hit a bloop single and went to second on an error by second baseman Daniel Descalso. David Freese led off the fifth for St. Louis with a single, and scored on a Decalsco sac fly after moving up on a single by Matt Adams.

The Cardinals had bases loaded in the sixth and the Tigers infield traded a double play for a run, but from that point on Westbrook allowed just one baserunner to reach base. St. Louis tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on an error.
