Down to his last strike, Billy Butler homered off Cardinals closer Jason Motte to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the ninth. Yuniesky Bentancourt doubled the go-ahead run in the 14th and hit a two-run homer in the 15th to lift the Royals over the Cardinals, 5-3 in 15 innings.

Bentancourt doubled home Alex Gordon off Eduardo Sanchez to put the Royals up 3-2. In the bottom of the 14th, the Cardinals nearly wasted an opportunity to tie the game. Allen Craig was on third with one out when Tyler Greene hit a line drive to centerfielder Jarrod Dyson. Instead of tagging up, Craig came half way down the line and had to return to the bag, wasting a easy sac fly RBI for Greene. However, Yadier Molina singled off Royals closer Jonathan Broxton scoring Craig to tie the game 3-3.

In the 15th, Dyson reached base on a bunt single and moved to second on a sac bunt. After Gordon struck out swinging, Bentancourt took Sanchez deep to left for what proved to be the game winning hit.

Broxton finished the 15th in a 1-2-3 ninth for the win.
