The St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs finish up OTA’s this week with a mandatory three-day mini camp that started Tuesday and ends on Thursday. Both Jeff Fisher and Romeo Crennel said much will not change this week before the teams head into a six week “dead” period before the official start of training camp.
The focus has been on the team’s draft picks. Head coach Jeff Fisher likes running back Isiah Pead and thinks he’s a player who can use his quick, explosive moves on specials teams.

According to StLouisRams.com writer Nick Wagoner, rookie wide receiver Chris Givens “has wasted no time making a strong impression during the Rams offseason program. Givens has rotated his way through the top three units, working with every quarterback on the roster at various points. He’s also made it a point to spend extra time after practice running routes and getting his timing down.”
Veteran running back Stephen Jackson is challenging the Rams first pick of the second round, WR Brian Quick, to become a leader on this team as well.

The Chiefs have had near-perfect attendance at the team’s voluntary offseason workout program. Safety Eric Berry had an excused absence from Tuesday’s mini camp for personal reasons. The only other no-show was Dwayne Bowe. He’s not required to attend. Players under contract are subject to fines reaching $60,000 if they miss minicamp practices, but unsigned players aren’t subject to a fine. Bowe will earn over $9.5 million this season if he signs the one-year franchise tender.

A good sign for the Chiefs is the other unsigned player, first round pick Dontari Poe, has participated in the team’s offseason program thus far. Crennel will not offer any insight into who the backup to Matt Cassel will be. Crennel says second year player Ricky Stanzi and newly acquired Brady Quinn continue an equal rotation. Crennel would not say who would be number 2 on the depth chart, if he needed to answer today.
