Matheny keeps options open as Garcia goes on the DL

June 8, 2012 By Bill Pollock

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny elected to add another arm to his over-taxed bullpen by calling up Fernando Salas to take the place of starting pitcher Jaime Garcia, who was placed on the DL with a shoulder strain.

Matheny is keeping his options open for his starting rotation and said he’s likely to go with someone on the roster, but didn’t share his thought immediately saying, “We’ve got some ideas, but right now, we’ll just go with the extra pitcher in the bullpen and figure that out as we get closer,” Matheny said.

With a day off on Monday, Matheny would technically not need a fifth starter until Saturday, June 16th against the Royals.
