Cardinals hold off Mets

June 4, 2012 By Bill Pollock

Allen Craig homered in the eighth inning after the Mets tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and the Cardinals hung on for a 5-4 win Monday afternoon at Citi Field in New York. The Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie by scoring two in the seventh. Mark Rzepczynski came on in relief of Kyle Lohse and gave up a two run homer to Scott Hairston tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the frame.

In the eighth, Matt Holliday led off with a single and with one out, Craig homered to left. It was his sixth homer in just 16 games this season, making the score, 5-3.  The Mets ralliled in the eighth and had runners on second and third against Edquardo Sanchez, before getting a run back on a sac fly.  Jason Motte was called and struck out David Wright. Motte pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two more for his ninth save.
