New York Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana threw the first no-hitter in franchise history, a span of 8,020 games, as the Cardinals were shut down 8-0 Friday night.
Santana got a little bit of help from the umpires in the sixth inning. Former Met Carlos Beltran hit one over third base that appeared to hit the line, but was ruled foul. Mike Baxter made a tremendous catch in left field to rob Yadier Molina and got injured on the play.
However, Santana’s effort can’t be minimized. He struck out eight and threw 136 pitches, mixing in a great change up low in the strike zone and coming upstairs with his fastball keeping Cardinal hitters off balance.
Adam Wainwright took the loss giving up six earned runs in 6.1 innings. He drops to 4-6 on the year and his ERA is 4.98.
