Here’s a lesson for would-be thieves: If you’re going to steal a computer from a car, it’s best if it’s not a police car you take it from.

A judge in Columbia has put a University of Missouri student on five years’ probation for stealing what police call “a mobile data terminal” from a police car in the department’s garage.

Drew Decker was caught when an officer saw him walking down the street with the computer and thought it looked like the computers the department uses.

If Decker completes his probation, the felony stealing conviction will be stricken from his record.
