NCAA clears UMKC in grade changing case

May 16, 2012 By Bill Pollock

The NCAA cleared UMKC of wrongdoing after Henry Lyons, a part-time professor, claimed that an F was changed to a passing grade in his Career and Life Development class during the fall semester of 2010, by the university to benefit a student-athlete.

The NCAA’s decision was made based on the initial failing grade in the course not impacting the student athlete’s eligibility. According to the school, the student-athlete followed guidelines available to all students to improve the grade. The NCAA found since the student followed those guidelines without assistance from the athletic department, “there does not seem to be a basis to contend that an NCAA violation was committed.”
