Virginia Commonwealth University is leaving the Colonial Athletic Association and will join the Atlantic 10, announced by university president Michael Roa. The move will take effect in all sports on July 1, 2012.
The addition of VCU brings the Atlantic 10 to 15 members for the 2012-13 season. VCU’s basketball program has been on the up and coming under coach Shaka Smart, and the Rams may now have a chance to become an NCAA tournament regular. VCU went from the First Four to the Final Four in 2011.
