The Humane Society in Cape Girardeau says it took in about 4,000 animals last year. It hopes to get some money from the city, the county, and the cities of Jackson and Chaffee to help pay the costs. Those four entities have contracts with the society, which wants them to pay half the costs of feeding and housing animals, giving them medical care and, when necessary, euthanizing them.
