Judge: Ordinance cracking down on hiring illegal workers not enforceable

May 11, 2012 By Mary Furness

A federal judge has told the city of Springfield it cannot enforce its E-Verify ordinance. Voters approved it earlier this year but three local businesses have filed a suit against it.

The ordinance requires all employers doing business in the city to use the federal system that checks the legality of workers.  The judge who has blocked the ordinance says it’s probably illegal because the city finance officer is charged with enforcing it, not the city courts.
