Barge, crane capsize forces workers into Smithville Lake

April 21, 2012 By Mike Lear

Seven workers had to jump into Smithville Lake Friday when the barge and boat they were using capsized.

The men were working to repair a bridge on Route W near Little Platte Park. A crane being used to lift steel beams became off-balance and topped.

The men were in the lake for about 15 minutes before being rescued. One of them, 55-year-old Carl McCray of Blue Springs, was flown to an area hospital as a precaution with what the Highway Patrol calls minor injuries.

The incident is still being investigated.
