A federal judge says the St. Louis Art Museum does not have to return a mummy mask that the Egyptian government claims was stolen from it sometime in the 1960’s or 70s. The judge says the federal proscutor has not proven the mask had been stolen or that the museum obtained it illegally. The museum says it had resolved any ownership issues before buying the mask in 1998.
