Most of the Cardinals on the Opening Day roster were still in Florida, but that didn’t stop over 10,000 people in Springfield from showing up to catch two at-bats each from World Series MVP David Freese and Matt Holliday. They each played just four innings as the “major league” squad beat the AA affiliate 3-2 at Hammons Field.

The only home run on the night came from Ronny Gil, subbing for center fielder Jon Jay, who will start the season at Class A, Palm Beach. Back in Florida were starters Lance Berkman, Carlos Beltran, Rafael Furcal and Yadier Molina. Also, none of the starting pitchers made their way up north.

The Cardinals will bus down to Miami today to get ready for their season opener tomorrow against the Marlins in their new ballpark.
