Private contractors to rebuild levee blown by Corps last year

March 24, 2012 By Mike Lear

The Corps of Engineers is aiming for mid-June to continue restoration of the Birds Point-New Madrid levee that it blasted three massive holes in last May. The repair work will be done with private contractors.

The Corps will begin advertising for companies to do the work by year’s end, to build the levee up to 62.5 feet.

The decision to blow the levee last year to save Cairo, Illinois, resulted in the decimation of 130,000 acres of farmland and homes in Missouri.
