Schumaker headed to DL with strained oblique muscle

March 20, 2012 By Bill Pollock

St. Louis Cardinals starting second baseman Skip Schumaker is headed for the DL and will likely miss the season opener after suffering a torn oblique muscle along his rib cage. The injury occured last Friday, but the severity of the injury wasn’t known until Monday.

It is the same type of injury Schumaker suffered last fall that forced him to miss the NLCS. For now, the battle for the starting job will come down to Tyler Greene and Daniel Decalso. The Cardinals will likely have to fill two spots now on the 25 man roster with Schumaker and Allen Craig starting the season on the DL. Craig is coming back from a knee injury.
