Almost 160 years ago, a St. Louis woman opened a home for poor, single women. The Charles Home was known as a “Home for the Friendless.” Today’s owners of the home are closing it by the end of June because of financial losses and low occupancy. Bethesda Health Group has owned the home for the last six years. Today it has 71 residents, some of whom can live independently. Others need assistance or are in skilled nursing facilities. Bethesda will relocate them to its eight other facilities in the St. Louis area.
