Legislators look at loosening restrictions on raw milk sales

March 19, 2012 By Jessica Machetta

Raw milk sales are again being taken up by the Missouri legislature. Senator Luann Ridgeway of Western Missouri says current law provides a limited exception to state milk inspection laws for a farmer to sell raw milk directly to consumers … if it is delivered to them for their own use.

Her bill would expand that exception to allow a farmer to sell up to 100 gallons of raw milk or at a farmer’s market.

Easing restrictions on dairy farmers who sell raw milk has been taken up by the Missouri legislature over the past several years, but lawmakers have been unable to push anything through to passage.

The Senate Agriculture Committee will hear testimony for and against the bill Wednesday.
