Flip-flop commissioner not allowed to run for congress

March 19, 2012 By Jessica Machetta

Former Cass County Presiding Commissioner Herschel Young is not being allowed to run for congress as a Democrat. Young was a Republican when he took the presiding commissioner’s job. Two days later the county prosecutor filed an ouster action against him because he’s a convicted felon and state law forbids convicted felons from holding office. He had filed as a Democrat for the congressional seat now held by Vicky Hartzler, opposing the county prosecutor, who also has filed for the job.

The Democratic state committee has returned his filing fee. The Kansas City Star is reporting Young now is thinking of running as a Libertarian.
