Royals’ 21 year old catcher Salvador Perez, who just signed a new multi-million dollar contract, has a sore knee and was taken out of Tuesday’s 7-5 win over the Reds, after the first inning.

Perez injured his knee in the bullpen while warming up starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez before the game. Perez was taken for an MRI to determine what might be wrong. “I’m not going to overly concern myself until I hear exactly what the deal is with him,” manager Ned Yost said after the game. “But honestly I’m a little bit concerned.”

Perez who dazzled the Royals with his hitting late last season was 0 for 15 this spring. If Perez is out for a while, the Royals will have to rely on backup Brayan Pena. Manny Pina, the third string catcher on the roster, had knee surgery and he’ll be out for the rest of Spring Training.
