Joplin landmark closing after 88 years

At its peak, Fred and Red’s chili restaurant in Joplin cooked a ton of chili a week and used 7,000. But owner Larry Wilcoxson says it’s time to turn off the fires in the 88-year-old downtown Joplin landmark. He’s 69 and wants to retire. He’s been working there for more than 55 of the place’s 88 years in business. He says he wants to sell it all — including his secret recipe.
