First MSHSAA concussion report released

February 4, 2012 By Mike Lear

The Missouri State High School Activities Association has released its first report on the number of concussions occurring in high school sports.

This first survey was conducted in December and only covers fall sports, involving nearly 113,000 athletes.

871 concussions were reported. 75 percent of those were in football, followed by boys’ soccer and then a tie between cheerleading and girls’ softball.

Another survey will be done at the end of the school year and this year’s results will serve as a baseline for future years. The accounting is required by a state law passed last year.
