After a century, St. Louis no longer largest school district

December 16, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

The Springfield School district has become the biggest school district in the state although it has lost more than one-thousand students in the last 15 years.

St. Louis, the largest district for a century or more, has lost about 19,000 and has slipped to number two. The next five biggest districts are in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. Kansas City, which had almost 36,000 students 15 years ago has lost about 20,000 students, many of them to Independence which annexed several Kansas City Schools a few years ago.

Three districts have fewer than 30 students, Gorin, Revere C-3, and Missouri City.
