KC woman gets $6.1M from unclaimed property division

December 15, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

The state treasurer’s unclaimed property office has sent a Kansas City woman $6.1 million from the sale of a security she did not know she owned. It’s the biggest unclaimed property payment in state history.

The treasurer’s office says a relative had purchased the security years ago and apparently never told the woman it had been done. The office says it spent a couple of months finding the woman, who told the office to sell the security and send her the money.
