After coming in for one season to lead the Chiefs offense to a 10-6 record and AFC West title, Charlie Weis bolted for sunny skies and warmer weather to take a job with the Florida Gators. Now, Weis is back in the Midwest as the head man for the Kansas Jayhawks who fired Turner Gill after a 2-10 season.
Weis is a no nonsense type of coach who’s first priority will be changing the mentality of a losing program. “The first thing you’re going to have to do is put these players through a grueling offseason to change the mentality of the players,” Weis told Kansan.com. “Its not going to be pleasant around here in the spring time.”
Weis started 19-6 as the head coach at Notre Dame, but stumbled his last three years when Weis’ recruited players tried to make an impact where he went 16-21. While Weis will be tough on the KU players, he wants people to know he’s not a bad guy, saying that being under the microscope in South Bend, Indiana was tough on him and his family. “Somebody reads that one sentence in there, they don’t understand what the whole conversation was, and the next thing you know, you’re vilified. That’s probably the thing that we were dissatisfied the most with as a family. We were viewed as bad people.”
I hope with the arrival of Weis, he has some pull to keep the MU-KU rivalry going.
