The Miami Marlins are looking to make a huge offseason splash even bigger after meeting twice with Albert Pujols’ agent Dan Lozano on Monday at MLB’s Winter Meetings.
The Marlins signed free agent shortstop Jose Reyes and added closer Heath Bell. The Marlins met for about a half-hour with Lozano early Monday afternoon and then planned a late afternoon or early evening meeting. From what I’ve read, that meeting was going to help clear up for the Marlins if Pujols was really interested in listening to an offer from that club.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said the club still has “the possibility of signing another player or two,” and said he was serious about the pursuit of big name players.
This doesn’t mean the Cardinals are out of the running. Team executives also met with Lozano after having a face to face meeting with Pujols. The two sides were suppose to meet up again last night, but instead will meet Tuesday morning. General Manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the offer the club proposed to Pujols before spring training is being changed around.
The Post-Dispatch also reported that the Cubs made a qualifying offer as well.
