The younger Sweeney was one of three students from American University in Cairo who had been accused of throwing molotov cocktails during demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahir Square.

Derrik  has a dual major in Arabic and psychology at American University in Cairo. His father says he was studying in Egypt to learn the culture and was observing the demonstrations as “a phenomenon of the culture.”

Kevin Sweeney says his son will not return to Egypt to complete his studies.
