Sweeney expected to be released by authorities in Cairo today

November 25, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

Three American students — including a Missouri man — arrested during a protest in Cairo are being processed for release today.

Derrik Sweeney of Jefferson City was attending the American University in Cairo. He was among three students accused of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Sweeney’s mother, Joy, tells Missourinet she’s “absolutely elated” at the news of her 19-year-old son’s release.

She’s not sure when her son will return to Jefferson City, but expects him to be on a plane today.
