The state education commissioner says six charter schools in St. Louis should be closed at the end of the school year because of poor performance. The schools are sponsored by Missouri Baptist University.

The chairman of the university’s education division had earlier called for more support and direction from the state education department. The schools are run for the university by a Virginia company, Imagine Incorporated.

Student scores in the six schools are below those of almost all of the charter schools and traditional schools in St. Louis.
