Tonight many parts of the State will experience freezing temperatures. The State Fire Marshall Randy Cole says now is a good time to make sure heating elements in homes are in proper working order to prevent house fires.

He says that means making sure chimneys are clear of soot in the flu, making sure the furnace has been checked and is in proper working condition too. He says a smoke alarm is the best defense against serious damage from a fire, so making sure the smoke alarm has fresh batteries to start the winter months is important.

He says people will start celebrating the holidays soon, and candles and kitchens cause a lot of fires in the winter. He says kitchen fires have a high rate of damage because of the heating elements like stoves and ovens.
