Backup goalie carries Blues to franchise’s milestone win

October 27, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Backup goaltender Brian Elliott won his fourth straight start and picked up his first shutout of the season as the Blues won their third game in a row against the slumping Vancouver Canucks. The win was the 1,500 in Blues’ franchise history.

Forward Alex Steen scored two goals with the first coming 8:29 into the second period and then he added another one 6:17 into the third. Patrik Berglund rounded out the scoring with 2:51 left.

It has been a great story so far for Elliot. After spending time with Ottawa and Colorado last season, he just beat out Ben Bishop for the backup job behind Jaroslav Halak. Halak is off to 1-4-0 start, and Blues head coach Davis Payne turned to Elliott, who has responded with a 1.59 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage while going 4-0-0.
