The New York Times was the first to report that West Virginia will leave the Big East and join the Big 12. Any move by the Mountaineers would leave that conference with five football programs.

Meanwhile Missouri has yet to announce that it is applying for membership in the SEC. The Kansas City Star reported Tuesday morning that Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton said it could be “days or possibly a week or two” before Missouri’s application happened.

One thought is that Missouri would wait until next week to let it’s intentions be known, with the World Series wrapping up this week and with Texas A & M next on the schedule. Perhaps the announcement prior to the game with another Big 12 school leaving for the SEC would be viewed as a distraction?
