Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in Joplin, building seven homes in seven days. Here’s one family getting a knock on the door where they’re staying … the show’s crew telling them they’re getting a new home:
Two single mothers who will get new homes lost children to the tornado. Crystal Whitely lost two of her three children to the May 22nd tornado.
Crystal Cogdill’s 9-year-old son Zack Treadwell was also killed in the storm
Ten-year-old Uriah Nevins sums it up thusly: “I’m really excited about pretty much everything, i mean getting a new house is amazing, and getting a house, a home, for free, it just doesn’t happen every day.”
Uriah, his parents and three siblings lost their home in the May 22nd tornado. That’s the case for the other six families, as well, who will have their homes rebuilt by the crew of the popular television show.
Tom Walters, one of the seven, and his family are staying with friends, but it’s not the same as having a home of your own.
NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose is in Joplin to help. Ambrose spoke to students at Franklin Tech and told them the tools used to build the homes would be donated to Franklin Tech. Crystal Harrington of the Home Builders Association of Southwest Missouri says the tools are valued at about $350,000. The tech school was also leveled by the EF-5 twister that tore through the Southwest Missouri city.
