Natural Resources Dept. offers grant for recycling tires (AUDIO)

October 16, 2011 By Brian Hauswirth

The Department of Natural Resources has been awarding grants for making playgrounds out of recycled tires for years, but now it’s offering grants for tires to be used for running and walking trails. Department Spokeswoman Renee Bungart says this is a great way to help the planet.

She says there are a long list of applicants: schools, churches, daycare centers and government agencies have all gotten grants from the Department of Natural Resources for making playgrounds out of recycled tires since it began in 1994.

Since then, the Department has awarded more than 2 million in grants, and has about 400 thousand available this year. She says that is funded by part of the 50 cent charge on all new tires in Missouri.
