Springfield Hillcrest senior Dorial Green-Beckham is closing in the national career record for receiving yards. The record could fall when the Hornets host West Plains Friday night. Green-Beckham is just 369 yards away from Abram Booty’s career record of 5,867 yards set in 1996. Booty attended Shreveport Evangel Academy in Louisiana. Green-Beckham set the state record for most yards in a single game when he pulled down 354 yards in a win over Rolla.
The reason the record could be set tonight is Hillcrest is 6-1 and looking to wrap up the Ozark Conference Championship at winless West Plains. The Hornets are 9th in Class 4.
According to Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou.com, Green-Beckham will be attending the Mizzou game on Saturday on an unofficial visit. He hasn’t made a decision yet on which college he would attend but its between Big 12 and SEC schools. In addition to Mizzou, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma are in the running.
By the way, in case you’re wondering whatever happened to Booty? The following comes from a 2003 article by Ronnie McClellan, a writer for The Daily Reveille. Abram Booty was destined to become one of LSU’s top receivers in school history. After his first two seasons at LSU, he had 91 receptions for 1,394 yards and six touchdowns. But a back injury after his sophomore season that required surgery limited Abram to 26 receptions for 374 yards and two touchdowns in 1999. He still ranks ninth among LSU receivers for the most career receptions.
Abram said the injury and a coaching change were the two underlying reasons for him leaving the LSU football program. He transferred to Valdosta State University in Georgia to finish his football career in 2000.
