Through his radio at the conclusion of the Dover race, Columbia native Carl Edwards predicted a win for his crew at Kansas Speedway, which he considers his home track. After Sunday’s fifth place finish, Edwards was just happy they finished on the lead lap and thrilled they got a top five.

“I feel like I won,” Edwards said of his comeback. “We were very fortunate. I do not deserve to be sitting up here,” Edwards said. “We’ve messed-up enough in the past that I’m proud of our ability to keep plugging along. Maybe it’s a test to see if anyone melts down.”

The team couldn’t get their suspension figured out and after starting out on the front row, dropped throughout the race, at one point being a lap down, but with two laps left, found themselves in 10th. At the white flag, Edwards was sixth, and he made up one more spot on the last lap.

His fifth place finish was good enough to give him the overall lead in the Chase, one point ahead of Kevin Harvick and four behind five-time champion Jimmie Johnson who led 149 laps and won the race.

Johnson’s 55th career win ties him with St. Louis native Rusty Wallace for eighth overall.
