This month is International Walk to School Month, so organizations like the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation are trying to get more students to walk to and from school.

The Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation says this effort has been going on for years, but this is the first year it’s an official event, recognised by the state. Federation Executive Director Brent Hugh says October 5th is official walk to school day, too.

He says childhood obesity is high in Missouri, and there are health and psychological benefits to students walking to school. He says because of safety concerns, fewer parents are letting their children walk to school now than in the past.

He says programs where an adult walks or bikes with a group of students is a good solution to that problem.
