Another St. Louis inmate breaks out, jail director suspended

September 19, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

A prisoner of the St. Louis city workhouse who really wanted out of jail Friday night is back in it. Police say inmate Lorenzo Pollard fought off a dozen correctional officers with a home-made weapon to get out. He was out less than 48 hours.

He’d been in the jail since may, charges with theft, trespassing, resisting arrest, and property damage.

The head of the St. Louis city jail system has been suspended. City officials say Gene Stubblefield has been subpoenaed after a review of jail operations that included overtime payments and overdue bills … as well as a series of recent escapes. The police department says there are no criminal allegations involved.
