Arizona State QB Brock Osweiler hit Jamal Miles for an 11 yard touchdown pass in overtime, and the ASU defense kept Mizzou out of the end zone on the Tigers’ overtime possession to complete the 37-30 upset win. James Franklin rallied Mizzou from a 14 point, fourth quarter deficit and a missed field goal from Grant Ressel with :12 sent the game into OT.

The big question on everyone’s mind is why did head coach Gary Pinkel call two timeouts with Ressel lined up for the potential 48 yard game winner.

After the game, ASU head coach Dennis Erickson told Pinkel that Franklin was going to be really good. Franklin used his arm and his legs to almost single handedly bring Mizzou back. Franklin made better decisions and crisp passes to finish 26 of 42 for 319 yards and two touchdowns. Franklin also ran for 27 times for 84 with a touchdown. The last thing Mizzou can afford to do is let Franklin run the ball that many times every game. He won’t survive. You’ll hear here, it sounds like he’s having a hard time breathing and he really got banged up. Neck scratches, a wrapped up shoulder and hand. Franklin admitted he’ll be feeling it all on Saturday.

Somehow, the Tigers are going to need to find some able bodies who can run. On his very first run of the night, senior running back De’Vion Moore suffered an ankle sprain that will keep him out a considerable amount of time. That left the bulk of the running to Henry Josey who had nine carries for 94 yards and he caught two passes for 51 yards and displayed some great open field moves.

Mizzou will have to use next week to get redshirt freshmen Greg White involved as well as junior walk-on Jared Culver. Losing three scholarship running backs will affect this offense and how they game plan moving forward.

It’s apparent that Franklin has the throwing skills to be able to lead this team. Down 30-16, Mizzou caught a break when ASU muffed a punt with 12:44 to play in regulation. Franklin hit LaDamian Washington on a 25 yard strike to pull to within 30-23. Then with under five minutes to play, Mizzou had a 1st and goal after a long pass to Marcus Lucas. Finally, on 4th and 4, Franklin found Michael Egnew to tie the game 30-30.

ASU quarterback Brock Osweiler is a pretty special player as well. He threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns including a 60 yard strike to Aaron Pflugrad that put ASU up 16-10 in the second quarter. Ressel missed a 54 yard FG at the end of the first half, but hit from 47 and 19 in the third quarter to tie the game 16-16.

Late in the third quarter, ASU pulled out a trick play with Osweiler throwing a backward pass to running back Miles, who found Pflugrad open for a 35 yard touchdown.  Osweiler then looked to put the game out of reach with a 12 yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Mizzou outgained ASU 501-492.  There was only one turnover (the muffed punt), but 23 penalties between the two teams.
