MODOT urges caution for the holiday travel weekend

September 3, 2011 By Mike Lear

The last major travel weekend of the summer is upon us.  AAA estimates 590 trips will be taken on Missouri roads over the Labor Day weekend.

For those who will be out on the roads, the Transportation Department offers its interactive traveler information map. Spokesperson Sally Oxenhandler says that’s always good to check before a trip to see where road work, detours, flooding and other interruptions are taking place. She says there will be some road crews that will continue working this weekend. At other worksites, road closures may remain in place.

MODOT says about 65 miles of Missouri roads are still under water. Most of those are in northwest Missouri along the Missouri River. The Department has worked with its counterparts in Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa to create a regional detour that is also outlined on the Department’s website.

Traveler information is also available by calling (888) ASK-MODOT.
