Seven home runs were hit late Thursday afternoon up in Milwaukee, four of them coming from the Cardinals, including two from Albert Pujols as they completed the three game sweep over the Brewers and moved to 7.5 games in the standings after an 8-4 victory.
I’m not sure many expected the Cardinals to go up to Milwaukee, where the Brewers own the best home record in baseball and take three straight. For the second game in a row, Rafael Furcal led off with a homer and Pujols followed two batters later with a solo shot.
The big blow game in the third, when again just like Wednesday, the Cardinals hit a grand slam. Pujols followed up Jake Westbrook’s feat the night before to build a 6-0 lead for rookie pitcher Brandon Dickson.
Tony LaRussa downplayed the sweep saying of the Brewers, “I wouldn’t even begin to expect that they have doubt,” he said. “They know they’re a good club. The record they built, they built because they are a good club and they compete well.”
