12 Miami football players reprimaned; NCAA investigation continue for hoops player

August 31, 2011 By Bill Pollock

ESPN reported that the NCAA reprimanded 12 Miami University football players, citing that all must pay restitution for accepting extra benefits from booster Nevin Shapiro. The future of Missouri men’s basketball coach Frank Haith remains in the balance as Miami continues the investigation on one basketball player.

Eight of the 12 reprimanded will miss at least one football game this season for the Hurricanes. However, Miami is continuing an internal investigation of its own which may focus on basketball player DeQuan Jones who is a senior. According to a Yahoo Sports story, Shapiro claims he paid $10,000 to a family member to help secure Jones’ commitment to choose to play ball at Miami. The story alleges that Haith and one of his assistants knew of the payment and that the player himself was unaware.

How that investigation turns out, could have a direct effect on Missouri’s decision on whether they fire Haith for his conduct in this matter.
