Study says Barnes Jewish Hospital one of worst in nation for readmission rates

August 26, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

The federal government says the three worst hospitals in the country for readmission of Medicare patients within a month after their discharge are in Chicago, Boston … and St. Louis.

The federal study says more than one-fourth of the Medicare patients treated and released at Barnes-Jewish hospital for heart attacks were readmitted within a month and the record has gotten worse in the last two years.

Medicare says Barnes Jewish Hospital also performs worse than the national average in heart failure and pneumonia readmissions. It’s better than the national average in heart attack and heart failure and pneumonia deaths.
