The Missouri State Teachers Association says the law attempting to regulate the online communication between teachers and students violates teachers first and fourteenth amendment rights. Spokeswoman Aurora Meyer says sites like Facebook are an important resource for teachers to get insight into their students lives.
She says the hope is to get an injunction this week, that means courts would stop the law from going into effect next week. She says there was a lot of support for the lawsuit from teachers and districts.
Meyer says there are pieces of the law that do protect student safety, so the association won’t challenge the whole law – only the portion dealing with online communication. The association is collecting stories from teachers who have used social networking sites in a positive way with students.
