MU’s defense edges the offense in team’s second scrimmage (AUDIO)

August 18, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Mizzou quarterback James Franklin was 11 of 18 for 98 yards and Kendial Lawrence peeled off another 60 yard touchdown run as the defense won 12-8 in Missouri’s second scrimmage of fall camp.

Head coach Gary Pinkel has been very impressive with Lawrence and his type of running is what he’s looking for, but Pinkel still plans to use a full compliment of backs.

Gary Pinkel, post scrimmage comments (5:00)

“It was another big play. We need big plays – we’ve got to have guys on offense who are capable of big plays. I’ve said it before, if you don’t have an offense that has big play people on it, you’re not going to be. They’re all competing. On that play, you know he’s (Kendial) got great speed and hit a crease, maybe if some of the other guys hit the same crease they could’ve made it as well. He (Kendial) is working hard and he’s competitive, but we’re going to play all three of those guys.”

The defense real continues to dominate play. They are the fastest unit and some good size too that I’ve seen from a Missouri defense. They like to get after the ball carrier.

Senior defensive tackle Dominique Hamilton. “My personal opinion, I feel like the defense is great right now. I feel like we can get better, but right now I feel like we’re looking good. I think we’ve come together as a family. Of course every team has talent, we have talent too, but we’ve got that bond on and off the field. We know each other, everyone feels good about the person that’s starting feels that they’re going to get our back. If the ball is in the air, I know that Kip (Edwards) is going to be back there. If they run the ball, we know the d-line is going to be there.”
