Jackson County is asking voters to approve a one-eighth cent sales tax to pay for operations of the Kansas City Zoo. Petitions are being circulated in Clay, Platte, and Cass counties for similar votes. If all of the plans work out, the tax would create a regional zoo district that would raise about $17 million a year. The zoo’s budget is entirely borne by Jackson County now.
