Officials talk about deadly fungus after Joplin tornado

August 16, 2011 By Brian Hauswirth

Greene County and state health officials disagreed about the need to issue a statewide alert after a deadly fungus showed up after the Joplin tornado.  The Springfield-Greene County health department wanted to sound the alarm, but state officials were worried about a panic.  So the county issued a limited alert.  The state sent out an alert a week later.

It looks like state and local health officials disagreed about whether to let the public know about the deadly fungus that showed up after the Joplin tornado.  The Springfield-Greene County health department wanted to issue a statewide alert, but state officials said no, worried about creating a panic.  Local officials issued a limited alert, and the state sent out an alert the next week.

KTTS in Springfield contributed to this report.
