A Kansas City hospital that abandoned its liver transplant program 18 years ago has decided to get back into the business. St. Luke’s Hospital is the only Kansas City hospital doing heart transplants and has started a kidney transplant program since giving up its underperforming liver program in 1993.

The hospital had done only seven liver transplants in the three years it that department. But St. Luke’s says the Kansas City area has an unmet need for those operations now.
