Overland Park, just across the Missouri-Kansas border, is expanding its business development push. The latest business to go there is Fishnet, a computer security company, is moving to the Sprint Nextel campus in Overland Park, and it’s taking 175 of its jobs with it. Fishnet also plans to grow another 119 jobs within the next year.

Missouri Economic Development Director David Kerr says it won’t have a big impact on the state. He says the state’s focus goes much farther out on the map. He says the same people who worked at Fishnet in Missouri will still work at its new Overland Park location, and will continue to live here, and pay property tax and sales tax here.

He points out that Missouri is continually working to grow jobs and keep jobs here.

Although Fishnet won’t divulge whether Kansas offered incentives to relocate, Kerr says Missouri and Kansas have an ongoing relationship in bringing jobs to the entire region, expanding the focus of just bringing jobs to Missouri or Kansas. He says both states are offering better packages than most other states, and it’s a regional push, not divided by a state line.

He points to the relocation of Applebees from Kansas to Missouri, and keeping Harley Davidson here when they had considered moving to Wisconsin. And he says Missouri is working on several other big deals that he’s not at liberty to disucss yet.

CEO Gary Fish has been looking for a site to accommodate a company expansion, and the Sprint campus was a top contender, the Kansas City Business Journal reported on June 24. The publication says Fish said in an email that he agreed to a 10-year lease, but he declined to divulge other lease terms, including the amount.

Missourinet received an e-mail from Tiffany Fish that touts the draws to the Overland Park area, including several new business such as Quilted Memories, CRAVE, Congressman Kevin Yoder’s regional office, DABA African Hair Braids, Drivers Sports Cafe, Masterpiece Marketing Group, Apple of God’s Eye Child Care and others.
