It is possible that the rivalry between the St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings could be no more after next season. With the Atlanta Thrashers move to Winnipeg, the NHL is considering a major realignment to fit conferences from a regional standpoint.

One idea being floated around would shrink the divisions from six to four, creating two seven team divisions and two eight team divisions. With Detroit in the Eastern Time Zone, it is quite possible that the Red Wings would to the Eastern Conference with St. Louis a logical choice to stay in the Western.

Nashville and Columbus are also lobbying to move to the Eastern Conference. A vote could come at December’s Board of Governors meeting. For the upcoming season, the Winnipeg Jets will stay in their division with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes.
